DESCRIPTION
This is an excursion anyone can do no
matter what age or shape you're in.
It's an auto tour with a minimum of hiking that will lead you
into one of the Eastern Sierra's most scenic locales. A fall
jaunt into the Sierra on HWY 168 out of Bishop has to be one
of the most beautiful drives you can take in all of California.
I know that's high praise for a state known for it's famous
drives like HWY 1 in Big Sur or HWY 120 over Tioga Pass to Yosemite
Valley but if you love fall color and spectacular mountains
this road may beat them all with it's jaw-dropping scenery.
Early
October is the prime time to experience the outstanding display
of autumnal colors along Bishop Creek. The canyon's large
population of Aspen's are awash in vibrant gold's accented with
reds and oranges. Three good-sized lakes, North Lake, Lake Sabrina
and South Lake, set at an elevation around 9,000 feet and backdropped
by rugged Sierran peaks, are easily accessed by a short drive
out of Bishop. The fall color explosion you will witness along
the road to these lakes is nothing short of amazing! Stop wherever
you like and stretch your legs or have a picnic amongst the
beautiful Aspens of Bishop Creek Canyon.
