The hike
from Agnew Meadows to Lake Ediza is unquestionably one of California's
most scenic backpacking trips. Magnificent vistas abound on
this moderately strenuous trek into the Ansel Adams Wilderness.
If you crave classic alpine scenery filled with jagged peaks,
sparkling lakes, lush meadows, roaring creeks and wildflowers
galore, this trip delivers big time.
The prime time to enjoy this Eden of the Sierra is from mid-July
through August if want wildflowers. The last week of September
into the first week of October offers up a fantastic display
off fall color. Whatever time you choose, expect to be blown
away by the awe-inspiring beauty and make sure to protect it
by practicing low-impact camping.
This is one of the most coveted wilderness permits to get in
the prime backpacking season, so if solitude is what you are
after, there are far more lonelier spots in the Sierra to head
for. The permit system does keep the crowds somewhat in check
but expect to see quite a few hikers.
Some of the Sierra's most beautiful physical landmarks such
as Mount Ritter, Mount Banner, the Minarets and stunning Lake
Ediza are the highlights of this amazing backpack and are the
reason why hikers flock here summer after summer.
